O Pensamento de Oscar Araripe

O Pensamento

Existe a Arte e a Arte faz a vida e a vida as cores. Sem vida não é cor; é tinta. Cores, tintas... Desvairada arte”.

I know nothing and do everything. I don’t copy, I lie, truthfully. I do it because I know and I don’t know. Art is doing, then doing and last of all, doing. A painter, I dare to say: colors don’t exist. What exists is art and art makes life and life makes colors. Without life it’s not color; it’s paint. Colors, paint... Some don’t exist, others have no value. Painting is an extremely difficult art that should be done with much ease. Pretentious pretension. Crazy art.

"Olhar a natureza, fechar os olhos, e pintar. Pôr pintura na inteligência. Amo o talento que corrige a regra e a emoção. A Pintura é o silêncio.

To look at nature, to close your eyes, and to paint. Putting painting into the intelligence. I love talent that corrects the rule and the emotions. Painting is silence. Words can come later, never before, rarely during. Greater than the silence of nature only the silence of a good painting. Ideas. Ideas are paintings and paintings are quiet colors that scream silence everyone hears. I don’t speak, I paint. I dare to do whatever I please. It’s not the painter that makes the painting. It’s the painting that makes the painter.

Like Liberty, Beauty is inexpressible and can only be recognised when you live it. In front of a painting don’t think, feel. Beauty is not what it’s said to be. Beauty simply is and it is where it is. Art must not be subordinate either to religion or to the State, or even to Art itself. The best democracy is that which guarantees access to the arts. To honour Beauty – that’s the mission of the art of the person.

“A linha é libertária; deve-se desenhar pintando. Tanto quanto a cor, a linha revela o pintor. Não sou moderno. Muito menos contemporâneo. Sou pessoal, araripista, fora do centro, talvez arcaico.

The line is libertarian; one should draw painting. Just as the color, the brush stroke reveals the painter. I’m not modern. Much less contemporary. I’m personal, Araripist, off-center, perhaps archaic. I paint on the horizontal, on a horizontal easel, really close to the canvas, walk around the painting, but without being afraid of treading on it. I only need one brush, some paint and the Sun.

“O verdadeiro dinheiro é a pintura. Eis a missão do artista: purificar o dinheiro. Pinto como um falsário de notas verdadeiras. Arte, então, seria fazer do dinheiro pintura.

Real currency is painting. That’s the artist’s mission: to purify money. I paint like a forger of real bank notes. So art would be turning money into painting. A painting incapable of substituting money is nothing more than an afresco corpse. In painting, as in life, you have to go to extremes and in the face of danger, play. That is, were money to come to an end, paid employment come to an end....everybody would be rich. So that by painting or writing, the artist should kill off money. But, be careful: money, this old master of the East India Company, wanted to kill off painting, copying it through its fake banknotes. That is; fake money is vaccinated. It knows where to find art that’s submissive, buys it and protects it. We should paint real money with the aim of bringing it to an end and replacing it with painting. Sanctifying the artist that purifies money. How much is a color worth, an image, even in black and white, for a hiker walking out of the desert ? Blessed curse this business of  purifying money.

“A Arte motiva a arte. A Beleza é leve, alegre e radiosa. Dir-se-ia o pintor a borboleta.

Art motivates Art. Beauty is light, cheerful and radiant. It’s the extraordinary privelege of art that something sad expressed artistically becomes happy, and something that’s joyful fills the being with a calm happiness. Happiness warrants the doing; right there you have the raw material of Art. Nothing that’s not beautiful can serve any useful purpose. Beauty is necessary and useful and it’s not always that the intellect can justify Beauty. Beauty has the beauty of truth and the painter is the most handsome of men, along with the gardener and the poet. It could be said the painter the butterfly. To tell you the truth, I know and don’t know what beauty is, because it’s in many things and in nothing at all. I know that a good painting is recognised in an instant, when it becomes alive and the color of the inexistent shines, even more lively. The art of doing art, that’s real art. The sad painter can fly, but the happy painter can go beyond galaxies.

I was born with good eyesight, I know naturally where to find Beauty and Art. And if everything is written, painting is the finest of all arts. The rarest. That great convention of mankind, much older than the word, color is an invention of sight. Or could it be the other way round ? Rare matter, rare life, rare happiness. In other words, Art is even rarer than matter. So even though plentiful, there’s little matter, very little of it in the universe. Art therefore is an extravagant star. It can do everything, desire everything and say everything. Art, life, color. I search out colors as if looking for a sign of life. In art, you either invent a personal planet or die on the Moon. Art is the mother of all lives.

A pessoa carrega o artista. Poetava e filosofava, era povo e era nobre. Escolho o tema e me revelo. Poucas tintas, muitas cores. E ali estava a Arte fazendo ciência, a Arte querida, solidária e eternamente humana.

Writing and painting are sides of the same hand – what goes on paper must be elegant, and the pencil should fine tune the style. There’s little value in knowing that the technique knows, and art produces. It’s the person that carries the artist. I’d be the poet and the philosopher, I was one of the common people and I was a nobleman. I choose the theme and reveal myself. Little paint, lots of color. And there was art doing the work of science, beloved art, solidary and eternally human. In the invisible: that’s where art begins. And there you have it, Painting, the most beautiful of the arts, the most free, that lasts longest, that screams most silence and that possesses most personalness. I the creator of life, there to paint it in the colors of the Tangara bird-of-seven-colors. What more could a painter ask for if not to fly and be invisible?

Art precedes the concept. In all good art there is concept. But never can a concept be a work of art. Words can be revolutionary, but only painting changes the world. I’ve always been close to the line, having freedom as a rule; after all, I was the line - and it’s always like this: I start painting a lion and end up doing a self portrait, just because it’s easier. To write not to forget and paint not to remember. Painting is like writing, only without all the fuss. Tough writing, gentle and joyful painting.  When all’s said and done, I stole everything, from food to landscapes, from landscapes to lovers and that’s why I’m a painter. Better than painting is being a painter.

“A Arte funda a realidade. Preferivelmente, a bela. O modernismo é o Indivíduo. O pessoalismo a Pessoa.

Art lays the foundation for reality. Preferably, a beautiful one. Modernism is the individual. Personalism, the Person. The individual can even go looking for art, but Art is the Person. What counts is the person’s art. Life, really, the image of life, only painting possesses. Art makes nature and the nature of art is life. However, to affirm that everything that man does is Art is like lighting the bonfire of the vanities and not seeing the fire, the rarity of Art.

It may seem excessive but only many years later, already a professional painter, did I know, or rather, did I concern myself in knowing that red and blue make green. Nothing more sensible. But sincerely, I’m not that sure. I know that it’s my hands that paint and that intuition has a mind of its own, located somewhere around the head. Unbearable world of the intellect, so different from that of the hand.

Someone once said that a painter needs legs to reach the landscape. Walk, walk for a painter needs nothing. To paint you need a young boy’s daring, the conquistador’s audacity, juvenile intuition and the maturity of a venerable old man. That’s all. To paint like a thief in white gloves. Happy is the painter who’s eccentric. The beautiful and the good make the painter-thief. The brain lives in stone, the hand in the clouds. Good heavens, I could turn the world on its head, just by painting it reflected in the water!.

Art is desire –, and being that, it made life. In life you paint, well before and much more than on canvas. Spoiled son, in no way prodigal, the painter does what he wants with life. I paint, but, to be honest I think about world peace and how (just like the landscape) the world should be. Keep quiet, paint and do gardening. He was honest and gave life to colors – there’s my epitaph.

Death, in no way colorful, tends to be substituted by life, extremely colorful. Colors are virtues that have to be painted. I put off being a painter to be a writer, and so be able to paint, when I was ready for it. I wake up early: drawing is learned with the morning mist, that shows the line of the mountain. To paint is to birth eyes.

Tivesse a altura humana e estaríamos no concreto.

Art, owner of life, of colors, and of words, was there at the start of everything, inexistent by the way, or rather, about to exist. Very near or very far we were always in the abstract. Were it of human height it would be concrete. Better to call the abstract subjective, simply that and only that as an example.

I’ve even chatted with a strawberry plant, danced with fireflies, but I’ve never heard stars. That is, a painter should hear nothing, shouldn’t write or say anything, just paint, and then not even that. In fact a painter shouldn’t even look. So, lucky the painter who finds his support, be it on earth or in heaven. The more personal the support the more original the work, and vice-versa. The difficulty in painting stars is that they look like fireflies. To separate, separate the paint from the colors. Every young boy (painter) loves birds and hates the police.

Procuro repor tudo que o tempo me roubou. E as mãos que me fazem carinhos”.

If only we had open hands and closed eyes and we would all leapfrog with the world. But life is fettered. It’s better to rest the eyes, while I paint, as if I were asleep, in a deep sleep putting all the energies back. I try to put back everything that time has taken from me. I dream of everything too. To paint, in many senses, means to be patient. Not in order to finish the painting, for lucky is the painter that paints fast and makes no mistakes, but in order to leapfrog with life. At the end of the day I’ll keep just the hands. And the hands that caress me.

Blind yourself, for a painter needs to paint. For example: the blue silk butterfly of the River Trapicheiro (a little river of dark stone that runs down from the Corcovado in Tijuca in Rio) was the greatest treasure, as long as I could take it in my fingers and spread its poisonous iridescent dust in my iris. The iris, as you know, is the colored part of the eye. Thus my brush was different. I’d take it with me, I only had to look down for it to reach the stars, so that it wouldn’t be either science or philosophy that would unmask it, but rather art itself. Art, arousal, desire, elevation.

If I were alive and, what’s more, painting, or rather, if I were painting and, what’s more, alive, it was because love was in me, won step by step, from the times of my long-lived eel, transformed into so many beings. So, love is archaic. Impossible outside of art, Art made it possible. Art is not love, but it made love.

Writing should have the colors of the words, and don’t think that colors have no sound, rhythm, multiple meanings like words do, and that they can’t be invented indefinitely. There is a lot of enjoyment in writing. New art, with lots of different paint, is a tough art to carry out. But, why write, when you can paint ? Painters, especially the eccentrics, almost always came from writing. Rarely from painting to writing. I wonder if this is not proof of the need for intelligence in painting. For sure it is. I do believe in the intelligence of painting, since luck smiles on painters.

Sim, a pessoa viria.

The person – and here again this little revolutionary word would climb up the barricades flaunting its irresistible flag. Come with me, it would say. And the good artists would follow it. They would leave everything for it, such was its beauty and wisdom. Yes, the person would come. But he would have to change his life, or before that, change art so that life could again be Art. Vindictive Art that disdains uncivilised life. No mother would do it.

Brazil never again Brazil. A painter should cry for Brazil, fill it with tears of joy and extinguish the power-imposed frontiers. What counts is Brazil with no frontiers, but with art and libertarian education. Art versus Culture. You can learn in the schools and with the masters, but it’s dangerous. Demand rare and natural born artists, who can free themselves from culture and attain the essence, which is exactly the art of the masters. Culture, therefore, is (very often) like a virus and the pursuit of truth through the beautiful can embrace perfectly all forms of justice.

Existe preto no vermelho. Verde e preto, eis aí o meu pensamento”.

What a painter really likes is his afternoon coffee. He likes to get up early, not need to wash his brushes and paint. Eat, yes, eating is a good opportunity for a good painting lesson. I try to have white dishes and be at one with what I eat. I go easy on the salt and on the white. That is, whenever I can I use white. I always think that green is really what makes red. There’s black in red. Grey is made by a few heavy clouds. Yellow is the light of Sirius reflected by the Sun on a papaya. Blue, it depends. If anil doesn’t make it as a color, it’s a feeling. If it’s Prussian, we’re in the black. Pink is a Chinese invention. Colors as lovers. What color was Brazil ? Many, would say the obvious. But Art was way beyond and way below the obvious, and the color of Brazil was... green and black. Green and black, this is my thought.

Painting is the art of leapfrogging stages, and the best time to paint is between day and night, when stages can be jumped. The day starts with the Sun already painted and the night is an infinite black background, where all the colors meet. Leapfrog, for a painter needs no firmament. One day even the blind will be able to see a painting, and a scientist paint a theory. After all, status is having a garden and taking care of it. The more poetry, the more power. A gardener yes, a politician no. The more beautiful the garden, the more just, truthful and full of hope. All that’s valid for painting is valid for life.

A Alegria é azul, anil...

Droplets suspended in the atmosphere are crystalized by the light of the Sun that makes them blue. Clouds are colored pleonasms and  the sunset and sunrise ruin the blue of the dark vastness. Happiness is blue, anil... Sometimes I think black is the most beautiful, sensual and warmest of all colors. Yellow, when really appreciated, can bring on an erection. Green, when in the company of black, expresses the best of thoughts. Silver and gold exist in nature, and if they’re there, they should be on the canvas. The pleasure that wise men have, that one day people will come to have and feel... the not having anything, the beautiful all. The having it all. In art, as in life, you’ve got to have it all.

Outside of Art there’s no salvation, she redeems all and gives direction. Painters paint to live long, and have erections. Ecstasy with painting, as far as I know, only Fra Angelico and I have had. No, don't call me a modern artist, painter's good enough for me. Even if they confuse me with a house painter, I prefer that distinction.

Aesthetics, the queen of what’s moral and ethic, must not and cannot be something savage drummed or clubbed into men’s heads. I’m always asked how I became a painter. Sometimes I say by breathing. Other times, by stealing. Still others, by painting. This, the style, this, the person, the art, like it or not, come from the gut. The person of the artist is a solidary soul, endowed with magnetism and distrustful of the eyes of reason. Style, I think, must never end. Actually, it should always begin. Inspiration is health, a lovely day and friends.

Strictly speaking, the history of Art does not exist, but rather a struggle for personalness, which necessarily implies an encounter with someone else’s being. Rembrandt was a king and a demon in many lifetimes, and painted as if he was just that. Goya did portraits of people as they were and are and will be. Silent or talkative, it doesn’t matter; like him, I was born suffering for the oppressed, for those hungry for food, for justice and for beauty. My paintings aspire to be happy to the extent of making people dance the carnival of football, an existential and extraordinary game, nothing sporty, where everyone has his own ball and can score his ‘letter’ goal... (N.B. – a ‘letter’ goal,‘gol de letra’, is famous in Brazilian football jargon - a goal scored with the legs crossed in an X, a cross-legged flick in goal with the ‘wrong’ foot, taking goal keepers by surprise)

The 21st must be the century of poets and gardeners, or it will not be a century at all.

Art makes art, leapfrogging, without fits and starts, and should reach fullness on the canvas. Just as there is no upgraded art, there is no art without leaps. If imperfection disturbs me to the point of despair, I take a deep breath – through the mouth, nose, lungs and eyes. Until it passes and the ideas come. After all, style begins with breathing, perhaps, and this is at the roots of art, in the inexistence of everything, when Art created everything, making all things absolutely not this reality, maybe just a little, and what you see in a good painting or on a day awakened by the sun.

Downwards and upwards, sideways and in front, Justice is similar to a painter’s brush strokes. So it’s a good thing that besides the natural pleasure, the act of painting can be full of justice. Just life, just art. One should paint as if passing judgement in a thousand cases, every single day, artistically. If Justice has its rock hard clauses, Art has its iron rules, all libertarian. Each point a legal opinion, and each opinion a summary and although it’s all different, to paint is like to judge, in the sense of searching for evidence and guarantees of the contradictory, since, here and there, judging or painting, it all started with Art. There is no unjust art, or Justice without Art.

Tudo unido, pessoa e natureza, homens e bichos, ar, águas e pedras”.

It was like this: Art, man’s godmother-lover, the person’s future mother, woke up one day in the middle of her sleep. Since it was night, it was dark. But there were some tiny bright dots in the pitch dark that she called stars. The moon looked like a star, except it was ours, because it’s very close. I’m sure that the greatest painter in the world would gladly exchange all his green and yellow for the sheer black of this initial art, that by the way, I myself have painted. In black and white. All united, person and nature, men and animals, air, waters and stones.

Air and water were the two most beautiful and vital creations of Art. Of art without any artist. But what would the brush say ? I really don’t know. In my experience as an eccentric and self-taught painter (as far as one can be), rhythmic breathing is a must, disciplinarily arrhythmic, where walking was like dancing, stroke by stroke, paint by paint, signing it only when the sketch and the painting become one, and life colors the canvas. Well, a painting’s finished when I sign it. That’s all I know.

We should also analyse a painting’s good brush stroke, certainly a lot would be learned about the origins and permanence of colors, and even a little about life’s future, for nothing is closer to colors than life; a man dies and the colors remain (and the man of colors too). A dream: to paint movement at rest, the silence of the scream. To paint as if there were nothing. Neither space, nor composition, nor shadows: only light. Light !? For what ?  To deny, deny that a painter doesn’t need shadow.

The beautiful stone I paint on -, a white stone, a polyester sail of a boat that’s leaving and flying into the bright black of the sky. It’s a moment where everything stops-, the Sun, in its great fifth magnitude, looks at me, and I can feel it coming in, its vitamin-rich light and its glorious art, and I make the first brush stroke, or line, or color, or I do nothing, thinking about not thinking.

No, I don’t believe in, and ask you also not to believe in perspectives. It makes no sense. A warlike idea infiltrated in art. Actually, man (or the landscape) can be depicted in three ways: like the Egyptians who looked at him (and at death) obliquely, like Greece who saw him always front on and like me, who rarely sees him at all, or rather, I always see him at the edge of the fields, out of the landscape.

It’s much more difficult and much more innovative painting art on the ground than in the sky. That is, to paint is to put the unspeakable in the right place. I therefore allow my hands to do the work when the rhythm is flowing, but never at that artistic instant of art when creation first comes about. The power of the brush, its putting things in order, is there, but its vigor seems to hide itself in the complexity of the artist.

When I paint I have to be the whole world, I must have absolute control of the hand, that is, all the muscles and organs open and contracted. That done, I work. I paint as if I were sharpening the nib, or making the tip of a spear, or rather, sculpting a beautiful woman in marble. I chisel away at the canvas, stroke by stroke, one color at a time. I try not to mix the paints, allowing the colors to blend on the canvas. I use only one brush if possible. I do everything with elegance, I sing and see if I’m dancing.

“A alegria salva. A alegria purifica. Deixe-me pintar a Alegria.

Joy redeems. Joy purifies. Painting is joy, joy at rest. Colorful joy, pure freedom. My painting is joyful, but I, the painter, carry the sword. A sharp sword to execute the sad heads and change the world into paradise. No, there’s no reason not to believe in paradise. The problem is taking hell out of there. Painting is that too: vade retro. Let me paint Joy. So, suffer, if that be the case, in literature, but never in painting. A painting should make eyes sparkle, because if it doesn’t it will turn against the painter and bury him in a valley of tears. Either paint with ease and make no mistakes, otherwise write. Burst your lungs, bleed, write until you bleed-, die for others, for yourself, otherwise paint.

To write is to doubt. To paint is to replace doubt with certainty. Here, to paint is to fight-, with the best weapon, the brush in the person’s hand. The real artist desires the world he can create. In art even reality is real. Because reality, artistically speaking, is a swampy place, slippery, deceiving-, it’s never level ground. I’m not saying reality is not real, but I’m almost saying that, since I feel like it. Of course it would be unthinkable to have a world, artistic or not, without it. But be careful. Some artists give it the status of being natural, others think that it, and everything else, can be created by man. By the artistic man. I’m inclined towards this. Like the hills, everything passes and the painter has to chase after what’s disappearing to revive it, or run ahead to invent it.

The older the creed the less decadent the faith. Long life therefore to the Sun god-, to the foton disc of unmasked plasma. To paint for the Sun god, for the painted solar disc. To artists falls the mission to create the non-existent. To paint however is to run in circles and have faith in the shape things will take, the main desire of painters today and always.

Paint makes the painter, who turns it into colors. Seen from the earth, the line of the horizon doesn’t exist and the sea is higher than the highest cliffs. The real artist’s space is just his – and of whoever admires him. There’s no competition in art, for no artist can be great if he’s taking somebody else’s place. I paint and I think as if I weren’t thinking, and the more the game distracts me, the more surprised I am. Intelligence, conscience, however  prodigious, lucid and just they might be, are not enough to ensure good painting. Vision, intuition and action, certainly, but not only that. And this “not only” would be the very reason for the existence of Art, what it aspires to.

O dinheiro acaba, e o artista nasce. Nunca cri na guerra. Nunca evoluí na guerra. Meus melhores pensamentos me vieram com a paz, deitado, bem relaxado, altruísta, caminhando e artista. Só a pintura me evoluiu.

Wars are waged for reasons. To paint without reasons and just for the sake of it, is the most absolute act of giving, and for sure could end all wars. Give what is genuinely yours, your personalness, and beautiful peace will come. Money comes to an end, and the artist is born. I never believed in war. I never evolved in war. My best thoughts came to me with peace, lying down, really relaxed, altruistic, moving on and as an artist. Only painting made me evolve. Without it I wouldn’t have the joy of the elegant gesture. I could have it elegant, but not joyful. Joy is the victory over wars.

Art that makes life is in the intimate nature of things, it starts with the individual and ends with the person. Painting, in the plenitude of its grace, when immaterial goods create material goods, combats spiritualized heritage and lays the foundation for life. Paint children who are not hungry, and they’ll soon be full. That is, I paint and think of the children. What a joy it is to be loved by a child ! Children are closer to life and the life of children is closer to Art; that’s why it’s even easier to paint with a child than,  let’s say, with Van Gogh, which to tell you the truth, I never did. Painters paint alone, although it’s a very lovely vision various painters painting together.

“Nada havia naquele nada. Pronto.

There was nothing in that nothingness. Nothing, nothing that could keep a desire alive for me, if indeed that was desire, and even from the light nothing flowed. It was the dead primordial world, sad and without color. Until Art emerged from absolutely nothing. Better art than never. So Art made the being. First the eye, then the hand. There you go. A theory to paint and live life painting. Lucky for painting. Here we learn nothing. It seems like we unlearn everything, painting.

Nothing that’s not artistic belongs to me. Art, I see it at the beginning, during and at the end of times, when it alone will be able to leapfrog over us. No artist is just an artist. He should be a philosopher, gardener, volunteer, philanthropist and founder. There has to be science, philosophic intuition, wisdom, beauty at the fingertips to make life more pleasant and happy for everyone. Art has to have Art, molded right from the start, inside and outside of life.

Painting should come to the hands, to give grace to the eyes, to warm up the old folks and wake up the sleeping, giving our eyes the tender kiss, when, after life emerges bright and the brush penetrates the canvas, hard as an amazon jade green amulet. I forgot for twenty years that I was a painter. I thought of being powerful, being a journalist, a writer and only when I managed to be nothing, all things being equal, did I become a painter. A painter is like an avocado (!?), born ready and with a stone. But, exponentially, evolves quickly, even quicker than thought, since the stroke that hits the mark gets there first and says more than books.

Rapidamente, aos poucos, sempre desenhando e pintando, fui me curando. O texto me matava, a pintura me curava.

I shaved taking a shower and afterwards I sketched out a happy little painting and once it was done, then painting began to cure me. Quickly, little by little, always drawing and painting, I was curing myself. Text was killing me, painting was curing me. Discernment is impossible outside of the person, and that outside of Art. Individuals don’t think-, their vision is blind and they’re about to fall into the abyss. Artists fly-, they seek the precipice, for how to live in such a flat world?

“Venci a pobreza, a indiferença, a inveja, a ditadura dos militares, das mídias poderizadas, continuo lutando contra elas... embora, às vezes, penso que perco, pois, hoje, creio tão-somente no Governo do Poeta”.

I beat poverty, indifference, envy, the dictatorship of the military, of the power-imposed media, I’m still fighting against them...although sometimes I think I lose, since today I believe in nothing but the Government of the Poet.

They all influenced me, nobody influenced me. I like and I don’t like, I’m all of them and they’re all me. Color is an invention of painters. Theirs and of artistified nature, while it’s alive. Thus, color, because of its non-existent nature, is the essence of the painting. That’s what I touch and turns to gold. The golden therefore is the meeting of all the colors.

Color the paintings and gray the hair. A good painter is a beggar at night and a nobleman in daylight. Painting has value because it’s a living being, very special, with a life that’s painturesque and busy, and at the best of times, still. Like an archaic Arcadian I only wanted the Beautiful. Nothing hierarchical, nothing oligarchical. Simply free. Independence, the breathing person should be in the Government of the Poet.

"Pudesse eu dizer nada quando escrevo, tanto quanto quando pinto. O texto busca a imagem, enquanto a imagem acha a palavra.

If only I could say nothing when I write, as much as I do when I paint. Text seeks out the image, while the image finds the word. It stays silent and screams for its expression. In silence, painting teaches the precision of the line, of the dot, of the brush stroke. The light shines and pulls out phrases and theses with just one exclamation. I keep thinking about a fantastic museum where the paintings shout out. It’s curious: today, the scream, in painting, still doesn’t travel through the air.

Eis a Pintura.

One day, a fool, ill-fated time, I pretended not to know what Painting was. Cleverly tricked, influenced by relativist idiots, I was a hit saying: Painting !? I know nothing about Painting. In fact I knew everything. It was very simple: what is Painting ? Close your eyes and immediately open them again. That’s what Painting is. It’s in the bones. In the seeing after the gloom. At the first instant of seeing, when my heart throbs.

When I paint outdoors, which is what I always do in dreams, little birds of all sorts come and land on my shoulder. Even the wary scaled pidgeon comes and eats out of my hand. I think it’s because my land has palm trees / Like no place else does / Full of panapaná / The Indians that lived here / called it Pindoramá.

“A Pintura?

Painting? I know it’s an art of wise old men and young libertarians and that it’s something good enough to be loved, admired and immortalized. Painting is generosity. Only painters call the shots more than popes, princes and bankers. For that reason, painters should be poet-kings, elected, pure and candid but never candidates.

Like precious stones, flowers should be loved for their mere beauty. A good jar of flowers has to be made and has to be perfect and have the spark of life at first glance. The flower of genius is born of a single gush and a good painting of flowers should smell more and better than a field in bloom. But, why talk about flowers when I can paint them?

What matters is the flower being beautiful and being able to come to life in painting. If you can smell it then you’re before a masterpiece. A flower, be it red  or yellow, is always black when it dies. Except when it’s painted. To paint the pick of the flowers – that’s the aim of art.

“Comer vendo flores é a melhor refeição. Pinto flores, sinto-lhes o cheiro, a brisa me refresca o rosto e me deixo levar pelas águas do rio.

Eating looking at flowers is the best meal. Flowers are to be shared with friends. It could be said that the flower is fire with petals.  Invented flowers smile pleasantly at natural flowers, educate children and set adults free. I paint flowers, smell their scent, the breeze cools my face and I allow myself to be taken by the waters of the river. A happy man is the painter of the beautiful flower that will never wilt. So, before it existed the black flower was already expected and painted. Color is the goodness of the flower. An art flower is a flower that lives and never dies. Beauty is a flower that shouldn’t be picked.

Flowers in vases, natural or artificial, and not in paintings, separate us from the garden of delights. Flowers should be in gardens and paintings, never in a woman’s hair. The silence of a painting soothes, calms, cures and consoles. Flowers are Nature’s most silent beings. In painting silence becomes color; it’s the cry of color. Colored silence, if you will. Pretty is the form of the flower and the flower of the form.

No transitório, só o eterno me interessa.

Wishes are flowers reborn. My flowers should be like apples in the mouth of Eve. Nothing more fair, nothing better than a “still life”, really vibrant and painted. In the ephemeral only the eternal interests me. A flower silences all words. Flowers are the passions of talent. Synthesis: Do it all, do everything, to end up painting just flowers. I prefer jars that are not flowers, the flowers of art and the art that creates the flowers.

Nada melhor. Nada maior. Mas, falasse eu de flores. Não. Falo de borboletas. As flores não valem nada. Farfalas, papalotes, papillons, mariposas, butterflies; borboletas são farfalas, papalotes, papillons, mariposas, butterflies. Psyche. Nada mais”.

I want, I long for art that is reciprocal and personal. A type of art that is a window on the world, that starts with nuclear fusion and ends with a sigh of roses. To welcome with flowers. Nothing better. Nothing greater. But, I’m not talking about flowers. No. I speak of butterflies. Flowers are worthless. Farfalas, papalotes, papillons, mariposas, butterflies are farfalas, papalotes, papillons, mariposas, butterflies. Psyche.Nothing more.

I look at heaven’s garden and paint flowers – flowers are more flowers when they no longer are. Orange candies. Recollection, flavor. Childhood, rose of infancy. Fruits, flowers in the backyards of restored delights. I’m happy, I’m sad, I’m a painter – I paint flowers that will be and that immediately are, once I sign my name. Its royal self the flower. Nobody loved it more than me.

“Arte invisível, enterrada no meu coração, onde aí começa a vida.

Invisible art, buried in my heart, from whence springs life. Little by little I became aware of the nature of flowers, being able to talk with the roses, to see the sky and be extravagant like a star. The hills go by, slip away and flowers wilt. To paint, paint the way a cat catches a sparrow. So get this: the painter is a child, with psychic integrity but no cruelty.

To be exempt: a feat that genius nurtures and makes the heart pulsate. I get involved, I’m into politics, I preach revolution with my jars of flowers. I paint because I paint. I don’t paint butterflies, I paint giant Blue Silks. Some even yellow....like flowers. I paint so that everything will become painting.

Estas criaram as flores”.

I traded madame butterflies for butterflies and those for flowers – and I removed men from the landscape, for it was beautiful, the art of writing painting. It wasn’t Man who invented art. When he appeared here coming from the fish, the world already belonged to the butterflies. They’re the ones that created the flowers.

The painter should and can treat his fellow man as he would himself. He speaks for the animals, for the flowers, for the animated hills and the folks with anima. He speaks and paints, for the painter has to keep quiet. Paint nature on top of nature, but nothing supernatural, rather seek the essence of the flower’s flavor, which is and isn’t on the wings of the butterfly. Let’s always paint flowers in the hope of making them soar like butterflies. The eyes are the butterflies of man.

Art is restless, but only until it brings life. After all we must be patient. Soon we will be colors and then flowers. Then we will have leapfrogged. Colors are the invention of flowers. That’s why I comfort myself and cheer myself up with the happiness of my painting. Butterflies, flowers. Both extravagant, between one and the other my heart wavers.

“Arabescos.

Arabesques. I don’t feel comfortable with the painting of mathematics. I prefer that of the philosophies, a great liking for those of biology  and especially the painting of universal physics. All that I’ve painted were cosmic landscapes of magnetar flowers.

There is a personalness in flowers, and flowers never lie. One day, all of a sudden, there in that open meadow, a butterfly became a flower. It was a painter that became a florist, for our field has more flowers and our flowers more love. Flowers, therefore, are like children, and art is life and life is closer to the children.

E a melhor arte é sempre erótica.

The canvas is in fact a battlefield, preferably one in flower and easily won. Each painting is a victory, without casualties - , the victory of life over life -, you can be sure, death is just another of man’s unfortunate inventions. A true artist doesn’t die. And the best art is always erotic. Hence the value of flowers, where man and his classic archaism join his intuitive nature, since life consists of putting something of value into an empty jar (of flowers). From sex I'd keep just the orgasm. From the flowers the fragrance and the colors.

Happy is the artist who improvises. ....At heart, in principle, when all’s said and done, I believe it all was and will be improvisation. Improvisation is the art within art that makes color blossom. Classic like a pair of pitchers. Symbolic like two lovers: different, but condemned to be together. Eternal like flowers and the butterflies, and yet so fleeting.

Here, in this total silence, in this act of pure leapfrogging, perhaps from motion to  static (where all is at rest and can be seen), I have to have the painting already done. Everything else is a surprise, rhythm. For example: photons. I think photons are the flowers of light and if that’s so, as it seems to be, the only thing left for us is gardening and poetry. Vivacious is the surprise of a flower.

OK that a lily in the meadow may have dazzled Solomon, but, an artist, no matter how confuscian or taoist he is, should not let himself be taken in by the beauty of any flower. It’s risky. Better to find beauty in his own bowels, even if they’re “terrible beauties.

Voar. Simples como pintar. Na arte, vê-se o futuro”.

Hopefully artists can be found who are able to paint new jars of flowers. If you treat flowers right you’ll have before your eyes implicit and explicit sensuality, and if it is, as it is, a difficult art to arrange a jar of flowers, imagine, dear sirs, painting one. But, beware the reality of the flower. Paint it with the eyes shut. Flying. As simple as painting. In art, the future is seen.

Defying geometry, vases of flowers should be precise like a circle and personal like a hyperbole, as well as extravagant and simple, flowers being the matter and the meaning of peace. Flowers with butterflies, that’s the best painting of all. With no flowers, we’re on Mars. With no butterflies, same thing.

“Como a arte faz a vida? - eis a nossa questão.

How does art make life? – that’s our question. But, at the painting of a new jar of flowers everything disappears, since art comes beforehand, and at one and the same time, including and excluding life itself.Revolution in Painting is to paint a new jar of flowers.

“Pinto e combato. As flores movem o mundo.

I paint and I fight. The brush, and more than that, the paint recreated in colors, are the most powerful weapons. Flowers move the world. Perhaps,  and strange as it may seem, fragrance may have created art, even before Art had created life.

I write by painting. Art, naturally, teaches art, which is to live, as it were, painting. Words, it must be said, are there to be painted, like flowers. Painting came to me only when words were beginning to subdue me and calling out for silence. That’s where I think my painting was born. Quiet like a color. You see I never painted, I think I was always a poet, maybe a gardener who loved painted flowers.

“Melhor é jardinar. Pintores deviam pintar jardins. Salsa sim. Junquilho não, está demais. Onze-horas, com certeza, enfeita tanto, é tão generosa. Meu mais belo poema-paisagem: "Perpétua Roxa / Araucaria Angustifolia”.

The best thing is to garden. Painters should paint gardens. As a painter I’m always ready to judge, to paint in life where it hides itself (sometimes) in beauty, and so I decide what must live and what will die. Grass no. Parsley yes. Clover no, that’s too much. Moss-rose for sure, so decorative, and so generous. My most beautiful poem-landscape: “Bachelor’s Buttons/Paraná Pine.

Alegre. A fazer o dia alegre. A alegria pintada. Meras tintas animadas, eis aí a flor da pintura”.

Not to yield to glory, to eternity. These common things in this world of dust. Turn to dust, now that is to unite, to be the woman, the flower, whatever being you like, whether painted, written or spoken. To mimic. To be invisible and even then not fly. Just simply being, and being intrusive. Another day goes by. Simply that. Happy. Making the day happy. Happiness painted. Mere animated paints, there’s the flower of painting.

“Flores, flores, sim, fazem um pintor pintar. Rendo-me a elas.

Flowers, yes flowers make a painter paint. I surrender myself to them. I capitulate, fall before their beauty, their meaning, their hospitality. Friends, accept my flowers that aren’t flowers in vases that aren’t vases, on table cloths that aren’t even table cloths. And that sometimes they are visited by butterflies, wich are not even butterflies".

Liberty is a question of aesthetics (a virtue of painters), there’s no beauty in misery. Every flower is beautiful. All that’s beautiful is free. I paint flowers to live by colors and die happy.

Liberty is a question of aesthetics (a virtue of painters), there’s no beauty in misery. Every flower is beautiful. All that’s beautiful is free. I paint flowers to live by colors and die happy.

“Feliz o artista que improvisa. ...

Daí a academia dever casá-las; separadas porém juntas”.
